6113: OB Iymaan Sheikh (2008-2015) to volunteer in Ethiopia (02/05/2017)
I graduated Bancroft's in 2015 and I am currently in my second year studying Law with Politics LLB at the University of Manchester. This summer for 3 months I am volunteering abroad through International Citizen Service in Partnership with VSO (Voluntary service oversees). VSO is an international development charity that holds the vision for a world without poverty. They send volunteers abroad across the developing world to make a difference and empower young people. We are so fortunate in England to have access to clean running water, free healthcare and above all a pretty amazing education system. I know I personally felt very fortunate to have been able to attend one of the top schools in England. When I go across in June to Mekelle, a city based in the northern region of Ethiopia, I will be staying with a host family and working in the local community. One of my specific projects that I will be undertaking while over there is in education. All across the developing world there are thousands of children that either have no access to education or the education they get given is simply not sufficient enough to help them grow. For the developing world to grow and become the striving communities they can be, educating the younger generation is key. One of my challenges before I go abroad to volunteer is to raise £800. This money is not to pay for my flights or accommodation, that is all paid separately by VSO who receive funding from the government, but rather I am fundraising this £800 for VSO itself. The money will go directly to them to help them continue their amazing work around the world and will help them not only expand into more countries but to also continue sending volunteers abroad. Here is my JustGiving page where there is more information about VSO and my placement abroad; https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/iymaan-sheikh

6100: Sweeney Todd - Senior School Musical (12/01/2017)
The Bancroft’s Players are delighted to invite you to attend our production of ‘Sweeney Todd- Schools’ Edition’ on Thursday March 23rd, Friday March 24th and Saturday March 25th. With a 46 member cast, made up from the U4th to the U6th, a range of cameos from our 3rd formers, a band made up of many of our young musicians and a whole troupe of student technicians and makeup artists, ‘Sweeney Todd’ promises to be a night not to be missed. Recently brought to life in a film starring Johnny Depp, Sondheim’s ‘Sweeney Todd’ is a tragicomedy involving unwitting cannibalism and a lot of stage blood! Benjamin Barker was a young father, with a beautiful wife who caught the attention of the powerful Judge Turpin. Fifteen years after he was sent to Australia for life for a crime he did not commit, Barker returns to London to exact revenge on those who wronged him. On his way, he meets a grotesque former acquaintance who always had a soft spot for him and a kind sailor who gets caught up in his murderous antics. The events build up to a devastating climax. The performances will be held in the Great Hall, starting at 7pm. Tickets are £7 for adults and are available from school reception now. Please contact kay.kennedy@bancrofts.org at the School Office reception to arrange your ticket purchase stating that you are an Old Bancroftian. We look forward to seeing you there! 6099: FIVE’S COMPANY – THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1964-68 (03/01/2017)
FIVE’S COMPANY – THE COMPLETE RECORDINGS 1964-68 There are probably not so many readers who remember the post-match dance at the OB’s Rugby Club in Loughton on 13th February 1965. But Eddie Broadbridge (1955-63) does. That was the evening his new band, Five’s Company, replaced Eddie and the Shifters, his old band of legendary OB fame, and were paid handsomely for their services: £17+10s. for an evening’s work, divided by five. In a previous article Eddie described how rock came to Bancroft’s – not so long after skiffle. Now he’s pleased to announce the release of all the recordings he made with Fives’ Company accompanied by a launch party at the Crown and Anchor, 374 Chiswick High Rd. on Friday 27th January between 2 and 5 pm. All are welcome! Among Eddie’s experiences with Five’s Company was a rejection slip from Beatles’ manager Brian Epstein, who “unfortunately can do nothing for you”. Eddie did not take this lying down.
